To take your boat out in South Dakota is to experience the seemingly endless miles of rolling grasslands or the mountainous Ponderosa Pine-covered landscape of the Black Hills in Western South Dakota. If rivers are your primary path, the Missouri River flows through the middle of the state, and there’s plenty to do along the journey. Dock your boat and visit some of the historic landmarks along the banks. The Yankton Historic District is home to iconic architecture of the late 19th century that evokes the spirit of days gone by. At Chief White Crane Recreation Area, set up for the night in the campground and get a glimpse into the life of the indigenous Sioux tribe.
Lake Oahe, the long, narrow reservoir of the mighty Missouri River, is one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States and is a bustling spot for fishing and camping. A power boat and a canoe are equally right at home, and anglers cast their lines at the lake, renowned for excellent walleye, smallmouth bass, and other freshwater fish.
Further west, you’ll find pine-scented, forested scenery of the Black Hills around you and many waterways ideal for spending a day on the water. To start, the clear waters of Lake Pactola make for excellent swimming and floating along the water, taking in the wildlife. Timid deer wander among the trees, and keep your eye on the sky to spot a bald eagle flying high overhead. Dock your boat at the serene Sylvan Lake to take in the nearby rock formations and hiking trails and feel at one with nature in this peaceful setting.
