Jacksonville Boat Buyer's Guide
Buying process
Buying a boat in Jacksonville follows five steps: find the boat, pre-qualify for financing, inspect and sea trial, complete the bill of sale and title transfer, then register the vessel with your county tax collector. Pre-qualifying online before you shop means you know your budget and monthly payment going in.
Registration and titling
Any motorized vessel operated on Jacksonville's public waterways must be registered with the Jacksonville Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), regardless of length; non-motorized vessels under 16 feet, such as canoes and kayaks, are exempt. Registration is handled through your county tax collector's office, and requires proof of ownership, proof of sales tax payment, and a completed HSMV 82040 application. Registration fees run from $5.50 a year for vessels under 12 feet up to $189.75 for vessels 110 feet and longer, based on seven length classes, plus a $2.25 service fee and small additional charges on every transaction. Some counties add an optional local fee on top of the state fee. Titling runs separately: $5.25 for an electronic title, $7.75 for paper, or $11 for an expedited title, with a $1 charge per lien recorded.
Licensing
Jacksonville doesn't issue a traditional boating license. Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 instead needs an approved boater safety course and a Boating Safety Education ID Card to operate a vessel with 10 horsepower or more. Courses are available online or in person through NASBLA-approved providers, including the Jacksonville Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the ID card is permanent once earned.
Storage and insurance
Storage costs vary by region and type: dry stack in high-demand coastal markets like Miami or Fort Lauderdale typically runs $200 to $600 a month depending on size, while wet slips run $10 to $30 per foot. Jacksonville doesn't legally require boat insurance, but any marina or lender will, usually liability at minimum and hull coverage on a financed boat.
Inspection before you buy
Arrange a sea trial to test engine performance, steering and handling under load. On a used boat, a marine survey from a certified surveyor is worth the cost, checking the hull, engine hours, electrical systems and any sign of water intrusion. Ask for maintenance records before you commit.
Required documents
You'll need the signed title (or Manufacturer's Statement of Origin on a new boat), a bill of sale showing price, proof of sales tax paid or exempt, a completed HSMV 82040, valid photo ID, and a lien release if the boat was financed.
Living aboard
Living aboard is legal in Jacksonville, which has one of the largest liveaboard communities in the country, centered on Fort Lauderdale, Miami, St. Petersburg and the Jacksonville Keys. You'll need a marina with liveaboard slips, usually at a premium over standard dockage, and some municipalities limit anchoring time outside designated mooring fields.
