Boat Description

FOR SALE: Columbia 50, Yellowbird (Hull #32) from Marina del Rey, CA 90292. This motivated seller presents an EXCELLENT opportunity for a "LIVEABOARD" experience with great comfort during the vessel's restoration. The spacious main cabin measures 11 ft wide by 17 ft long, offering a panoramic view of the Marina del Rey main channel from the open rear cockpit. The boat is located in a HIGH SECURITY gated permit parking area, ensuring ULTRA-PRIVATE access. It also features an extra-wide 60 ft berth for your in-water auxiliary vessel. Yellowbird has a rich history, having raced in San Francisco Bay and gracing the cover of original Columbia 50 factory brochures (Sail#8534). Originally commissioned in 1967 for aerospace pioneer Frank Druding and berthed at the St. Francis Yacht Club, she was designed by naval architect Bill Tripp, Jr. for heavy-weather racing. Unique modifications include an additional ton of ballast and a shorter mast. The second owner, electrical engineer Scott Foster, along with his family, explored key ports in the South Pacific. Current owner, architect/developer Gary Neville, has owned Yellowbird since 1978, making extensive upgrades, including a new teak interior and modern electrical systems. In 1997, custom stainless steel modifications were added, along with new ground tackle and spars. The hull was repainted to a sleek all-white with a red boot stripe in 2013. Notable features include a heavy-duty stainless steel bow roller and an innovative dual bilge pump system. While some unforeseen circumstances have delayed the full redesign, the vessel remains strong with no known structural issues. An engine rebuild or replacement is needed due to previous submersion damage, but the engine is ready for removal and repair. The seller will provide technical consultation and detailed diagrams to assist the buyer. Recent upgrades include a custom teak cabin interior and a fully equipped galley. Yellowbird's original equipment and design make her a standout choice for both yacht club events and serious passage-making, promising smooth sailing in various conditions once restored. Don't miss the chance to make this remarkable vessel your own!
