About Classic (sail) Boats
Sailboats built between 1943 and 1975 are regarded as Classic Sailboats. Some sailing organizations restrict classic sailboats to those constructed only of wood; however, other construction materials are permitted in more liberal circles.
Apart from the material used to construct the boat, the design must have characteristics that make it classic. The appearance of the yacht usually defines this. Classic lines and features like overhanging transoms or shapely bows with a prominent bowsprit support making it a classic sailboat.
Another feature that makes a classic sailboat is the history of the vessel. Prominence in yacht races over the years will be a significant determinant in classifying a boat as Classic. Classic Sailboats tended to have much deeper drafts than their modern contemporaries and were generally much heavier. The beam of Classic Sailboats was much narrower, and consequently, modern vessels of similar length are considerably more spacious. Classic Sailboats were designed and built to be sea kindly and provide comfortable accommodation for the guests and crew in all sea conditions.
Classic Sailboats have a certain magic about them. Rich varnished mahogany and bright brass work are almost irresistible attractions to the purist; however, before succumbing to the charm of classic sailboats, remember that your maintenance bill will be significantly more than a modern sailboat.
Mooring opportunities may be limited because of these vessels’ great draft, and marinas may be challenged when slipping classic sailboats because of the small beam and deep draft.
