Boat Description

FOR SALE: Columbia 50, Yellowbird (Hull #32) from Marina del Rey, CA. This is a motivated seller offering an exceptional opportunity as a "LIVEABOARD" vessel, promising superior comfort during restoration. The expansive Main Cabin measures 11 ft. wide by 17 ft. long, providing a panoramic view of the bustling Marina del Rey Main Channel from the open rear cockpit. Enjoy high-security gated permit parking in an ultra-private setting, complete with an extra-wide 60 ft. berth for an auxiliary vessel. Yellowbird has a storied history, having raced on San Francisco Bay and featured on the cover of original Columbia 50 factory brochures (Sail#8534). Commissioned in 1967 for Bay Area pioneer Frank Druding, she was designed by Naval Architect Bill Tripp, Jr. for heavy-weather racing, boasting an additional ton of ballast and a shorter mast—potentially unique among Columbia 50s. The second owner, Scott Foster, an Electrical Engineer, along with his family, voyaged through key ports in the South Pacific/Oceania. The current owner, Architect/Developer Gary Neville, acquired Yellowbird in 1978 and has since made significant upgrades, including a redesigned teak cabin interior, new electrical wiring to code, and custom stainless steel modifications. In 2013, the hull was painted in all-white LP with a red boot stripe. Noteworthy features of Yellowbird include an integrated, all-stainless heavy-duty bow roller/mounting plate assembly and a dual bilge pump system for enhanced safety. The vessel is currently in need of engine repair or replacement due to previous submersion damage, but it remains structurally sound with no hidden issues. The seller will provide technical consultation and detailed schematics for the new owner. Recent upgrades include a custom solid-stock teak cabin interior, a split-level main cabin with a single forward stateroom, and a variety of modern amenities. With a strong fiberglass hull designed for heavy weather, Yellowbird is perfect for both yacht club showcases and challenging passages. Once restored, she promises smooth sailing, excelling in winds of 20-25 knots. Happy sailing!
