Design Manager David Wilson explains, 'Our team has taken everything we've learned over the past 18 years – in terms of design, engineering, boatbuilding, and tournament experiences – and incorporated it into the development of this new 58 model.' After thorough consideration of size ratios, Viking has optimized the length-to-beam ratio of the 58 Convertible, resulting in a more efficient and spacious vessel. Despite being longer than the most recent 55 Convertible, the 58 maintains the same beam width of 17'9'. This careful consideration of proportions allows the 58 Convertible to achieve the same top speed as its predecessor, while using more efficient 10-cylinder engines. The performance of the new 58 has been highly praised, with its remarkable ability to keep spray down and run clean even in rough waters, thanks in part to its carefully positioned strakes and aggressive design. According to Wilson, 'Other critical factors for performance include the boat's speed, balance, center of gravity, trim, shaft angle, and engine installation. Our team has scrutinized and adjusted each of these elements from previous models in order to continuously improve and build a better boat every day.' The larger size of the 58 Convertible also brings benefits to various areas of the boat, including the cockpit and salon. Coming in at 14 square feet larger than the 55 Convertible's cockpit, the 58 boasts a variety of features, including a mezzanine with shaded seating, upholstered cushions, freezer, cooler, and storage for bait and tackle that can be accessed easily. The cockpit also provides ample space for engine access. The interior layout has also been slightly modified, with the galley and dinette placement being switched to create a more streamlined and convenient companionway. The master stateroom, now located on the port side, offers increased walkaround space and hanging locker space, making it an ideal choice for owner/operators or those with part-time crew. Viking's continual improvement and innovation can be seen throughout the 58 Convertible, including in its operational systems, which have been designed with ease of use and maintenance in mind. With a focus on reducing weight, the 58 Convertible is built with a modified epoxy resin in the hull skin and a resin-infused balsa core. Its strategically placed integral fiberglass fuel and holding tanks also boast balsa coring on all sides for added stiffness. The Engine Room, a signature feature of Viking yachts, continues to impress with its industry-leading equipment and precision engineering. The standard propulsion package consists of a pair of MAN V12 1400CRM engines, with additional options including the MAN V12 1550CRM, MAN V12 1900CRM, and the new MTU 10V2000 M96L engines.
