Boat Description

Since its launch, the second-generation 58 Convertible has garnered numerous five-star accolades from journalists, Viking dealers, and captains alike, all praising its dry ride, agile handling, expansive cockpit, and airy interior, among many other features. As the first owners began to take delivery, news spread through sportfishing ports worldwide that Viking Yacht Company had once again produced a blue-water champion ready for success. The company sold over 110 units of the first-generation 58 Convertible from 1991 to 2000, solidifying its status as a leader in sportfishing. "It marked a significant milestone for us," states Viking's President, Pat Healey. Eighteen years later, the Generation II 58 Convertible is not only a tournament winner but also the premier high-performance family cruising yacht in its class. Both fishermen and cruising enthusiasts are always on the lookout for innovative designs, and Viking has been delivering since 1964. "We’re not just revamping old ideas," Pat emphasizes. "Our Generation II 58 and all our vessels are fresh designs." The new 58 Convertible builds on the success of its predecessor while incorporating features from two generations of the 55 Convertible, which has dominated the mid-50-foot category since 2012. "Our design, engineering, and experience over the past 18 years have culminated in the 58 we have today," Pat explains. Although longer than the recent 55 Convertible, the 58 retains the same 17' 9" beam, optimizing its length-to-beam ratio for improved performance and interior space, according to Viking Design Manager, David Wilson. The boat now boasts faster speeds under identical sea conditions due to its refined and efficient hull design. The underbody hull form allows the 58 Convertible, despite being larger, to match the top speeds of the 55 Convertible while featuring more efficient 10-cylinder engines. Performance has been the standout feature of the new 58 Convertible, which excels in minimizing spray and maintaining a clean run with its molded strakes guiding water efficiently. "It goes beyond just the strakes," Dave notes. "Key factors like the boat's speed, balance, center of gravity, trim, shaft angle, and engine installation have all been meticulously refined over the years. Building a better boat is our daily mission." The larger size of the 58 Convertible enhances all areas, particularly the cockpit and salon. The cockpit is 14 square feet larger than that of the 55 Convertible, complete with a fully equipped mezzanine featuring shaded seating, plush cushions, storage for freezer and tackle, and engine access. The interior layout has been streamlined, with the galley now located on the port side and the dinette on the starboard side, creating a direct companionway extending from the salon door to the forepeak. Below deck, the master stateroom features a port-side athwartships bed for greater walk-around space and storage, tailored for owner-operators or those who may have part-time crew. Viking’s renowned engineering and technology are seamlessly integrated for ease of operation and maintenance. "We focused on keeping the weight down," David states. "Every pound matters when it comes to speed and performance." Efficiency permeates the entire vessel, including mechanical systems in the engine room and lazarette. The standard generator, a powerful 21.5 kW unit, provides ample power for daily needs. Options for gyro stabilization include the Seakeeper SK 16 and SK 9, with the latter offering exceptional stability. Electrical systems are easily controlled via conveniently located distribution panels in the salon and galley, equipped with clear, user-friendly switches. Below the waterline, durable and long-lasting components are supported by dedicated pumps for air conditioning, live wells, and washdown systems. The cockpit, at 165 square feet, is the largest in its class, offering a full 12 square feet more than its nearest competitor. Stainless steel gas pistons operate all cockpit lids, and deep gutters ensure quick drainage. The centerline lazarette houses the Seakeeper and provides access to steering and drain pumps. Insulated fish boxes, a live well, and ample storage complete the functional cockpit layout. Standard features include flush-mounted rod holders, a side locker for gaffs, a walkthrough transom door, and fresh and seawater washdowns. The observation mezzanine offers comfortable seating with drink holders, while additional storage and refrigerators ensure convenience. Access to the flybridge is via a one-piece anodized aluminum ladder with powder-coated handrails. The flybridge features an extended overhang, providing extra space, and a new center console helm design for added style and functionality. The helm boasts a stainless steel steering wheel, single-lever controls, and recessed electronics for protection against the elements. Guests can enjoy lounges, a two-person forward console seat, and a jump seat, with freezers and beverage coolers conveniently located. The salon impresses with its spacious layout, featuring concealed air conditioning registers, high-gloss teak or walnut finishes, and three distinct living areas. After a day of fishing, the L-shaped lounge facing the HD TV is perfect for relaxation. The galley is designed for efficiency with engineered stone counters, stainless steel appliances, and abundant storage, accommodating meals and snacks with ease. The three-stateroom, two-head layout offers versatility for both cruising and tournament fishing. Each stateroom is equipped with modern comforts, including air conditioning, overhead lights, and quality mattresses. The master suite is spacious with a queen walk-around bed and ample storage, while the guest staterooms provide flexible sleeping arrangements. The heads feature luxurious finishes and modern fixtures. Viking’s construction techniques maximize strength and minimize weight, utilizing advanced materials for durability. Standard propulsion includes MAN V12 engines with optional upgrades for even greater performance, achieving top speeds of 42 knots and cruising at 36 knots. The 58 Convertible exemplifies Viking's commitment to engineering excellence with features like advanced ventilation, fire suppression systems, and meticulous attention to detail in the engine room.
