Introducing a robust 1944 wooden freighter from Newcastle Ship Builders, measuring 104 feet, this vessel is an ideal working platform or a fantastic candidate for conversion. With twin Caterpillar engines, refrigerated fish holds, and the classic lines of a West Coast workboat, this Canadian-licensed ship is currently located in Campbell River.
This 1944 freighter exemplifies a design built for functionality rather than fashion, featuring a sturdy, round-chined hull with a raked stem and canoe stern, constructed from fir planking on sawn oak frames, reflecting the authentic proportions of a mid-century Pacific freighter.
Having undergone a recent survey in August 2026 by Anderson Marine Surveys in Port Townsend, she maintains her original configuration as a fishing freighter. Below deck, the layout includes a forward storage area leading to three insulated fish holds with an estimated capacity of 88,000, 140,000, and 95,000 pounds. Further back lies the engine room, followed by water tanks and lazarette. The fish holds are equipped with a refrigeration system capable of handling about 60 tons.
On deck, she features a hydraulic anchor winch, wooden masts fore and aft, twin steel booms, Gearmatic boom and topping winches, along with custom aluminum covers for the product holds. Powering this vessel are twin Caterpillar D343 diesels, each with 245 horsepower, connected to four-bladed bronze propellers via Twin Disc MG 514 reduction gears. Current engine hours stand at approximately 9,750 on the port side and 10,000 on the starboard. The ship’s electrical needs are met by a Detroit 671-driven 100 kW generator and a Kubota 14 kW auxiliary. Fuel capacity is around 2,500 gallons divided between two steel midship wing tanks, while fresh water is stored in stainless tanks of 900 and 1,500 gallons. Hydraulic steering is complemented by a Comnav 2001 autopilot.
The deckhouse includes forward staterooms, a head with dual sinks, and a functional galley complete with an oil range, refrigerator, and double stainless sink. The poop deck opens over the aft hold, while the wheelhouse, situated above the house, is equipped with helm seating, engine controls, and an extensive suite of electronics, including Furuno radars, GPS, AIS, multiple VHFs, a Kenwood SSB, and a Ritchie compass. The master stateroom, located behind the wheelhouse, includes a berth, navigation station, and head with shower.
Principal dimensions from the survey are 104' in length, 23.2' beam, and 9.4' draft, with a gross tonnage of 166 and net tonnage of 99. Currently licensed as a Canadian pleasure craft (BC10138610) and registered to Shaun B McNutt and Anna E Lock, this vessel is distinguished by its black hull. It is moored under lease in Campbell River until the end of June 2027.
The current owners purchased her in August 2026 and have been transparent regarding her condition. A keel scrape identified during the last haul-out was deemed superficial and non-structural, with temporary repairs in place until the next haul-out can be performed. The survey also noted areas of bulwark rot that need attention at the owner's convenience, along with a cook stove and hydraulic steering solenoid requiring servicing.
This vessel is offered as-is, where-is, having recently sailed to her current mooring, and is ready for her next owner to return her to fishing duties or initiate a conversion for liveaboard, charter, research, or other purposes.
