The Tartan 33 marked a significant evolution in Tartan's design philosophy, featuring a modern semi-fin keel hull. This model, crafted by Sparkman & Stephens, showcases a unique twist as Tartan enlisted the expertise of Henry Scheel for the innovative Scheel Keel. Initially, the first 180 boats were equipped with a fractional rig. Later, the Tartan 34 transitioned to a masthead rig. From a cruising perspective, the fractional rig offers ease of handling, thanks to its smaller headsail, allowing sailors to simply drop or roll it up while continuing under a reefed main.
