The Slocum 37 is a robust bluewater cruising sailboat, crafted for the realities of offshore sailing instead of the limitations imposed by racing regulations. Its design draws inspiration from the iconic Norwegian double-ended vessels created by esteemed naval architect Colin Archer, known for their ability to withstand the harsh conditions of the North Sea. These traditional workboats exemplify the highest standards of practical seagoing design—strong, weather-resistant, and capable of thriving in demanding environments. While boatbuilding techniques have advanced over time, the essence of the open ocean remains, and the Slocum 37 embodies this enduring philosophy of offshore readiness. Measuring 37 feet in length with a spacious 11'8" beam and a 6-foot draft, the Slocum 37 is designed for both strength and functionality. The hull design includes a gentle turn of the bilge and relatively full garboards, allowing for ample fuel and water storage beneath the cabin floor while facilitating a properly aligned engine installation. Though primarily built for serious passagemaking, the Slocum 37 is not just a utilitarian offshore vessel. The sail plan features modern sheet winches, slab reefing, and a boomed staysail, enabling the boat to be easily managed by a small crew. Currently, "Hiraeth" is docked in New Orleans at the Municipal Yacht Harbor, conveniently located just a short drive from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY). From Lake Pontchartrain, both the Mississippi Sound and the Mississippi River are readily accessible, offering excellent cruising opportunities along the Gulf Coast.
