Our vision for this vessel centers on creating a robust cruising ship that adapts seamlessly to the shifting moods of the sea, rather than conforming to racing standards. To achieve this, we sought the expertise of designer Colin Archer, renowned for his durable Norwegian double-enders. These boats have evolved to represent the pinnacle of design excellence, built to endure the harshest conditions of the North Sea. While times have changed, the unpredictable nature of the sea remains constant. We also considered cost and maintenance, recognizing that not everyone has unlimited resources. Ultimately, we chose to build our double ender at 37 feet, featuring a spacious beam of 11'8" and a draft of 6 feet. This heavy displacement vessel boasts an elegant 'S' shaped hull, smooth bilge lines, and ample space for fuel and water tanks beneath the cabin sole, ensuring a well-balanced engine installation. Although designed primarily for ocean cruising, the Slocum is not merely a utilitarian craft; it is equally perfect for leisurely summer getaways. Equipped with modern sheet winches, easy slap reefing, and a boomed staysail, she is simple to sail with a small crew. All sheet winches are accessible from the cockpit, and her streamlined design and fine forward entry make her easily manageable even in light winds. Currently, 'Hiraeth' is docked at the Municipal Yacht Harbor in New Orleans, conveniently located just a short drive from the New Orleans International Airport (MSY) and offers easy access to the Mississippi Sound and River from Lake Pontchartrain.
