Following a 2008 Pacific crossing, a Gemini owner enthusiastically noted, "this catamaran excels in both vast open waters and the gentle breezes of the Kona coast... the forward stateroom boasts a queen bed, while the main cabin can comfortably seat six. The full head features ample height and includes a shower." With exceptional sailing capabilities and generous living space, it's hard to find a downside. The Gemini catamaran is renowned as the world's most popular cruising cat, with over 1,000 hulls produced in nearly three decades. While many are used for coastal cruising, numerous models have successfully made oceanic crossings. In 2001, Tony Smith, the owner, designer, and builder of the Gemini series, sailed a new Gemini 105Mc across the Atlantic to Southampton, England, reaching impressive speeds of 18 knots while surfing down heavy seas. Many such adventures are shared in the Gemini Gems magazine and the active Gemini Yahoo forum. As sailors ascend the aft stairs, they are welcomed by a spacious cockpit with wheel steering, perfect for afternoon picnics. The expansive hard foredeck is enclosed by a stainless steel pulpit, with lifelines tracing the narrow side decks. Weighing in at around 8,000 pounds, the anchor chain and rode remain manageable. Sailing this lightweight vessel requires careful attention to heeling angles and reefing; a heel beyond seven degrees signals the need to reduce sail. Back in the cockpit, access to the interior begins at the same level as the cockpit sole, where a salon table comfortably seats four, or even eight in a pinch. Descending a few steps to the left leads to the head and shower, equipped with a propane-driven instant heater for hot water, ideal for those with water in the two 35-gallon fresh water tanks. Each hull's aft section contains two berths, with the master cabin located in the starboard hull forward, featuring a queen-sized bed and ample storage in the galley, which includes a propane-powered refrigerator utilizing the ammonia cycle. Primarily propelled by a roller-furled genoa and a smaller main sail, many sailors opt to enhance their sail inventory with screechers, asymmetrical spinnakers, and additional jibs. Each hull is equipped with a cable-driven, hand-cranked centerboard that can be fully retracted into a trunk for reduced draft or lowered three feet for superior upwind performance. While most sailing and motoring can be done with the boards half down, the ability to adjust them based on wind, current, or anchoring conditions is one of the Gemini's standout features. The 105 and 105MC models are powered by a 27 HP Westerbeke diesel engine connected to a Sillette tilting saildrive, which requires careful maintenance, particularly of the bellows.
