About Catamaran (sail) Boats
Catamaran sailboats have two hulls that are joined by a bridge. The hulls are aligned parallel to each other and provide buoyancy to the vessel. Catamarans range from small open-type boats with a single mainsail and around 14 feet long to serious cruiser-type models at over 60 feet. The small open-type catamarans are simple to rig and easily trailable. They are lightweight and have a minimal draft making them easy to launch and recover. More stable than similar-sized monohulls, they offer exciting acceleration, and several classes of these small catamarans have active racing competitions.
Cruising catamarans offer extended cruising and sea passages. The cruising catamaran starts around 30 feet, and the accommodation is in the hulls. The bridge that connects the hulls is spacious and provides ample area for a saloon and galley. The helm position is usually located aft of the aft bulkhead; however, many models have an alternative sheltered helm position in the saloon area.
On larger catamarans, additional cabins are located forward of the saloon to accommodate up to 12 guests. Onboard diesel engines are the usual alternative power source, with an engine located aft in each pontoon. Deck space on cruising catamarans is enormous. The sheltered cockpit provides comfortable seating, while the trampoline area forward between the hulls is the ideal sun lounging area.
