Bill Allison founded Flats Cat Boats out of necessity after a serious back injury during his college football career. Unable to find a comfortable boat, he dedicated years to designing a catamaran that would offer a smooth, dry, and shallow ride. This led to the creation of the first catamaran hull, initially made of aluminum, but Bill soon discovered that fiberglass was a quieter option that wouldn't scare away fish. He patented the innovative Cat Hull design for the Flats Cat on October 3, 1989, thanks to extensive research and collaboration, including support from Texas A&M. The revolutionary twin hull design enhances water flow and lift, setting Flats Cat apart in the market. The first model, the 21' Flats Cat, launched in 1991, followed by the 18.6' in 1995. Initially built in aluminum, the boats transitioned to fiberglass, with the 17' Flats Cat introduced in 2001 and the 19' model in 2002. Today, the 17', 19', and 21' Flats Cat models continue to be produced. Following Bill's passing in 2014, Gina took the helm until Chris Mapp assumed leadership in 2020.
