Boat Description

Malabar stands out as one of the most meticulously designed boats available today, prioritizing safety throughout its construction. Key features include dye-tested welds below the waterline, watertight bulkheads, an aluminum double bottom, a sea chest, full hardtop and dodger, an oversized NACA foil lifting keel, and a host of custom details. Renowned sailor Jimmy Cornell trusts aluminum lifting keelers for their safety, having sailed 200,000 miles with minimal risk of broaching. In addition to its strong safety profile, Malabar boasts exceptional sailing performance, highlighted by its oversized lifting keel and a large 560-square-foot self-tacking Solent jib, which can handle wind speeds up to 35 knots without reefing. Designed with simplicity, sustainability, and safety in mind, Malabar features a generous 1,000-gallon water capacity, eliminating the need for a complex water maker. Its impressive 2,354 amp-hour battery bank, powered by a substantial solar array, ensures reliable energy. A diesel-fired central heating system provides warmth throughout the boat, including the cockpit, while the aft deck offers shelter from following seas and a functional workspace. Safety is further enhanced with 40-inch high lifelines, Treadmaster deck covering, and strategically placed handholds. Inside, the cabin showcases traditional Herreshoff craftsmanship with Brazilian Jatoba cherry trim and solid Brazilian Cumaru teak soles. Custom joinery on all windows and deck hatches includes hinged Jatoba screens. The raised dinette provides panoramic views through thick lexan windows, while the well-designed galley features highly efficient keel-cooled refrigeration and freezer. Closed-cell polyurethane foam insulation throughout the vessel offers excellent acoustic isolation and additional buoyancy, with refrigeration insulation being up to a foot thick to minimize energy usage. The shower includes a mixer valve that pre-heats water to prevent scalding, ensuring a safe bathing experience. Malabar also includes a forward workshop with a workbench and drill press, an aft technical lazarette for easy access to various systems, including a washer/dryer, and much more. A comprehensive photo gallery of over 300 images detailing all systems and safety features is available upon request. Building a comparable boat today would take nearly a decade and cost between $2M and $3M USD, with the challenge of finding a yard willing to dye-test all underwater welds and implement the extensive custom features that Malabar has. Originally built for long voyages with his wife, the owner’s plans were altered due to her illness and eventual passing after 58 years of marriage. Malabar has been meticulously maintained, with systems tested and fully commissioned, ready for its next owner. The Volvo engine has only 75 hours of use. This vessel, offered to the next adventurer, is set for new journeys across the world's oceans.
