The Excess 14 design strikes an exceptional balance between the comforts of a cruising catamaran and the thrilling experience of sailing. Collaborating with renowned naval architects VPLP Design, the team achieved this through a sleek single-level layout that positions the steering at the same level as the cockpit. By replacing the flybridge with dual aft helms, they minimized wind resistance, lowered the center of gravity, and maximized sail area to 135 m2 upwind. For additional power, the boat includes a composite bowsprit ideal for tacking large downwind sails. The helm station design addresses common concerns among flybridge catamaran sailors: feeling disconnected from the crew and lacking rudder feedback due to hydraulic steering systems. On the Excess 14, the wheel provides an intimate connection to the crew (all at the same level) and the sea, using lightweight Dyneema steering cables. With clear lines of sight, you can easily monitor your crew, including pets and children, as well as the sails and any upcoming markers. The ability to switch between helms enhances navigation, docking, and mooring maneuvers. Thanks to Group Beneteau's partnership with VPLP and their expertise in ocean racing, the design team utilized advanced software to create a hull that optimizes the sail area to displacement ratio. The bridge deck clearance ensures smooth water passage, while asymmetrical hulls reduce interference drag—features that set Excess apart in the production catamaran market. Despite its sporty appearance, the Excess 14 is fundamentally a cruising catamaran. The interior is designed to maximize space and headroom with a practical layout suited for everyday use. Entering the salon, you're welcomed by panoramic windows and a bright, modern aesthetic. The upgraded galley features ample refrigeration, a stove-top, a deluxe oven, a double stainless sink, and convenient overhead storage. Companionways on either side lead into the port and starboard hulls. The owner's version layout includes a unique "walk-in closet" in the starboard-side owner's stateroom, which features two optional berths that can be lowered for occasional guests.
