About Submersible Boats
Submersible boats differ from submarines in that they rely on a mothership, while submarines can operate independently from and to the dock. Recent additions to the submersible range of boats have seen trailable versions that can operate on the surface and submerge to shallow depths.
Submersibles are generally launched from motor yachts using a crane, although, on some mega yachts, the submersibles have their own designated docking station below the waterline.
Submersibles that are part of the water sports equipment on large motor yachts can accommodate two to four people. However, submersibles designed and built for tourist activities can accommodate more than 20 people. Dual-function submersibles can operate both on the surface and below. The boats have wing doors that remain open while on the surface and can be sealed closed for diving. They have restricted accommodation availability, with a pilot and passenger being the limit.
Imaginatively painted out as dolphins or sharks, they can perform dives into and out of the water. Alternative designs provide a floating hull structure that incorporates an underwater viewing space. The boat remains on the surface, while the submerged viewing area offers a view of the shallow depths. The great advantage of this system is that while it allows for a beautiful opportunity to view underwater features, it is open to the surface to allow for natural airflow.
Remote-controlled or manned submersibles are used extensively in hydrostatic surveys, oceanographic exploration, and other commercial activities like maintenance on underwater communication cables.
