About Commercial Boats
Boats used for commercial gain by the owner or agent are categorized as commercial vessels. For example, fishing boats typically fall into this category when the boat is operated for commercial fishing. Commercial Boats must comply with regulations concerning the seaworthy condition of the vessel and safety equipment. Small commercial vessels are generally limited to 12 paying passengers; however, there are exemptions to this rule. For example, the long boats or dragon boats that accommodate more than 12 paddlers.
Dive charter boats are also classified as Commercial Vessels when they operate for profit in transporting passengers to and from dive sites.
Strictly speaking, all privately owned boats that are not recreational would be classified as commercial boats. Tourist boats taking guests to viewing sites or whale watching would also be classified as commercial boats. Similarly, small ferry boats transporting goods, vehicles, and people would also be commercial vessels. Non-government boats involved in Hydrographic survey work are rated as commercial boats.
In the US, commercial boats cannot be used for recreational purposes. Workboats and tender boats that serve oil rigs or dry docks are also commercial boats, as are boats that service navigation buoys.
