Used boat loans work much like new boat financing, with one difference that shapes everything: the age of the boat. Lenders price risk on how easily a vessel could be resold, so a 2023 model and a 2010 model of similar value can be offered noticeably different rates even when the borrower's credit is identical.

That doesn't make used financing worse. A pre-owned boat has already taken its steepest depreciation, so your money buys more boat, and terms of up to 240 months are available on qualifying vessels.

At Boatzon, financing sits alongside over 60,000 pre-owned boats. Pre-qualification takes about two minutes, uses a soft credit pull with no impact to your credit score, and returns offers from more than 20 marine lenders.

This guide covers what affects your rate on a used boat, age and survey requirements, and how to qualify.

What affects your used boat loan rate

Five factors determine what you're offered. Boat age is the one that separates used financing from new.

The age of the boat

This is the largest used-specific factor. Newer used boats, generally under five years old, qualify for the lowest rates available. Rate differences of two to three percentage points between a recent model and a decade-old boat of similar value are common, even with identical credit.

Brand and resale market

Lenders assess how easily a boat could be resold. Established manufacturers with strong resale markets tend to qualify for better terms than lesser-known brands, because the collateral is more predictable.

Your credit profile

Credit is the single largest factor overall. If your score sits just below a lender's tier cutoff, improving it before applying can be worth more than the delay costs you.

Down payment

A larger down payment signals stability and reduces lender risk, typically unlocking rates around 0.5 to 1 percent lower than minimal down payment loans.

Debt-to-income ratio

If existing debts consume more than 40 to 43 percent of gross income, lenders may raise your rate or reduce the approved amount even with strong credit.

Rather than publishing a single rate, Boatzon returns real offers from over 20 marine lenders based on your actual profile. Pre-qualification uses a soft credit pull, so seeing your rate costs you nothing.

How old a boat can you finance?

Age limits vary widely between lenders, and this is where working across a lender network matters most.

Some marine lenders won't finance a boat over 15 years old. Others specialise in older vessels and routinely finance well-maintained classics from the 1980s and 1990s. Brand reputation carries significant weight here: a well-regarded 25-year-old boat from a respected builder may qualify for terms that a 12-year-old boat from a lesser-known manufacturer will not.

Older boats generally mean: shorter maximum terms, a larger down payment, a survey requirement, and higher rates than a newer boat of comparable value.

Worth comparing: if secured financing on an older boat comes with a higher rate plus a full survey and premium insurance requirement, compare the total monthly cost against an unsecured personal loan with no survey requirement. Unsecured loans carry higher headline rates, but on older boats the all-in cost sometimes favours that route, and you keep the flexibility to sell without lien complications.

For boats around 15 years and older, or purchases under roughly $15,000, paying cash is sometimes more efficient than financing, because loan costs start to outweigh the benefit.

Do you need a survey for a used boat loan?

A marine survey is an independent inspection of a boat's structure, systems, and equipment. Most lenders require one on used boats above roughly $50,000 to $75,000 in value, and many require one on older boats regardless of price.

A survey typically costs between $500 and $1,500 and takes several days to schedule and complete, so factor it into both your budget and your timeline.

Even when a lender doesn't require one, a survey is usually worth commissioning on a used boat. It identifies problems that cost far more to repair than the survey costs, and findings give you a documented basis for renegotiating the price.

For most used boats above $25,000, secured financing offers materially better economics.Unsecured loans become worth considering when the boat is too old for secured financing, when the amount is small enough that survey and insurance requirements outweigh the rate benefit, or when you want to avoid a lien.

How to qualify for a used boat loan

Your credit

The largest single factor in the rate offered. Check your report before applying, as errors are common and corrections can take 30 to 60 days. Paying revolving balances below 30 percent of their limits helps. Boatzon works with lenders across the credit spectrum, including options for buyers with poor credit, and shows the best available rates across the network.

Your income and debt

Lenders look for stable income sufficient to cover the payment alongside existing commitments. Debt above 40 to 43 percent of gross income may affect your rate or approved amount.

The boat

Age, condition, brand, and value all affect available terms.

Your down payment

A larger deposit improves your rate and reduces total interest paid across the loan.

Budget check

A useful guide: total boat costs, including the loan payment, insurance, storage, fuel and maintenance, should stay within 10 to 15 percent of gross monthly income. Insurance commonly runs $50 to $200 monthly and slip or storage $100 to $500, depending on the boat and location.

How to apply for a used boat loan

What you'll need

  • Proof of income, recent pay stubs or tax returns
  • Bank statements
  • Photo identification
  • Boat make, model, year and hull identification number
  • Purchase agreement
  • Seller's details
  • The state where the boat will be registered
1

Pre-qualify

Takes about two minutes using a soft credit pull, with no impact to your credit score. Returns offers from over 20 lenders and remains valid for 30 days.

2

Shop with a confirmed budget

Leave room for taxes, registration and insurance. If you're pre-qualified for $60,000, shop in the $50,000 to $55,000 range.

3

Arrange the survey

On most used boats above $50,000, and on older boats generally.

4

Complete the application

The lender reviews the boat's value and verifies the title is clear of existing liens, which matters more on used purchases than new. Standard applications take one to three business days.

5

Close

You'll sign, provide proof of insurance with the lender as loss payee, and pay any down payment and closing costs, typically $1,000 to $2,500. Funding ranges from 24 to 48 hours to five to seven business days depending on the lender.

Buying from a private seller? Budget an extra 7 to 10 days beyond a dealer purchase. You'll coordinate the survey, title verification, insurance and fund transfer yourself. Don't commit to a closing date until your lender confirms they can fund by then.

Mistakes to avoid when financing a used boat

Skipping the survey

On an older boat, a survey costs $500 to $1,500 and routinely identifies problems costing multiples of that.

Not checking the title

Used boats can carry existing liens. Verify the title is clear before funds move.

Budgeting for the payment only

Insurance, storage, fuel and maintenance continue for as long as you own the boat.

Comparing monthly payments instead of total cost

A longer term lowers the payment and raises the total interest paid. Compare across the full loan.

Assuming the boat qualifies

Age limits vary substantially by lender. Confirm before making an offer.

It varies by lender. Some marine lenders won't finance boats over 15 years old, while specialty lenders regularly finance well-maintained vessels from the 1980s and 1990s. Brand and condition matter as much as age. Boatzon works with over 20 lenders, so a boat one lender declines may be financeable through another.
