Boat Description

During the 2022 Newport to Bermuda Race, the KIRAWAN proved her mettle, handling impressively even in intense conditions with winds reaching 35 knots and towering seas. This classic ocean racing yacht, designed by Philip L. Rhodes and launched on May 23, 1936, has a storied history. Robert P. Baruch, a New York stockbroker, faced disappointment in the 1934 Bermuda Race aboard his 56-foot schooner ZINGARA, finishing two days behind the leaders. However, by the time the 1936 race arrived, Baruch, now married and a partner at H. Hentz & Co., had taken delivery of the untested KIRAWAN, just a month before the race. To everyone’s surprise, she not only matched Olin Stephens’s STORMY WEATHER in a grueling 635-mile race but secured an overall victory, catapulting Rhodes’s career to new heights. KIRAWAN's design, especially her hard dodger, influenced many subsequent yachts. After the race, she cruised under the name SILVANA until the late 1940s, eventually returning to her original name on the West Coast, where she was owned by Hollywood actress Terry Moore. For over forty years, she sailed the Pacific, competing in prestigious events like the Transpac and the Los Angeles-Tahiti Race. After a major refit by film producer Sandy Horowitz, she returned to Newport for the 2000 Bermuda Race, revealing areas needing further work. A failed restoration left her in poor condition until a new owner rescued her in 2017. A comprehensive restoration at Joe Loughborough's yard during the pandemic has revitalized KIRAWAN, making her a stunning and capable classic cruiser-racer, true to her original design from 1936.
