The 58 ft Roughwater, crafted at the CHB Yard in Chung Hwa Boatworks, Taiwan, is built on a sturdy commercial trawler hull mold originally designed for fishing fleets. With less than a dozen units produced, these boats are a rare find on the market. Renowned naval architect Edwin Monk designed the 58 during the first major fuel crisis in the United States, focusing on creating a vessel that could traverse great distances efficiently and economically. Big Whiskey, equipped with a Detroit 6-71 naturally aspirated 2-stroke diesel engine, is known for its smooth operation and long-lasting performance. While the original cast iron fuel tanks posed issues, they've been replaced with durable Monel tanks in excellent condition. The hull is robustly constructed, reflecting the heavy-duty nature of commercial designs from the era, especially since 1978’s engineering capabilities were not as advanced as today’s composite technologies. The 58 ft model is available in two configurations: walk-around and wide body. The Barbara B variant features a wide body design, offering a spacious salon that spans the full beam of the boat, unlike the narrower walk-around salon. The 58 ft RW was truly ahead of its time, embodying innovation and durability.
