Boat Description

"Cohort II" is a 48-foot Mason Semi-Custom Bluewater Cruiser, built in the 1970s as a robust and capable vessel for world cruising. Designed for long-distance voyages, this yacht boasts self-tailing winches, an electric windlass, fully furling sails, solar power, air conditioning, and all the necessary systems for comfortable cruising. This yacht is seriously for sale, presenting a unique opportunity to own a well-equipped, proven offshore yacht that has been continually upgraded. KEY FEATURES: Cutter/Ketch rig with a full keel and molded-in hull; self-tailing winches (Barient models 28s, 27s, 26s); electric windlass with three anchors (CQR, Bruce, Fortress); Garmin electronics, autopilot, radar, solar setup, and watermaker; diesel generator and 16.5K BTU reverse-cycle air conditioning; Alder Barbor refrigeration plus an external fridge/freezer; full Eisen glass/Sunbrella cockpit enclosure; four 150W solar panels; external traveler system (2020s); bimini and integrated stern rail with dinghy davits (2012); and recent replacements of lifelines (2017) and ports (2016). VESSEL HISTORY & CONSTRUCTION: "Cohort II" is hull #31 of approximately 40 yachts constructed under Robert Vaughn's guidance in Miami during the 1970s. The hull is made of heavily hand-laid fiberglass featuring a full keel and cutaway forefoot. The deck and rig were designed based on plans from Adriatic Yachts (Alpha 48) in Pompano Beach, FL. The original build quality is outstanding, and the vessel has undergone continuous upgrades since the current owner's purchase in 2010, including major refits from 2010 to 2015 and ongoing enhancements through 2020+. Having been lightly sailed in Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, this boat is primed for offshore adventures. DECK & HULL: The hull was painted with Awlgrip and the deck with Imron in 2012. It features foam core insulation with solid fiberglass at hardware points and a durable tan truck bed liner non-skid surface. Thru-hulls and ball valves were replaced with Marlon fittings in 2012/13. RIGGING: The main mast was removed and repainted in 2017, with full replacement of standing rigging and turnbuckles by Yacht Rigger in Tampa. Stainless Sta-Lok turnbuckles were installed, along with a new custom aluminum mast step (2017). Genoa, staysail, and main furlers were replaced with Harken furlers in 2014, while the original mizzen furler remains. The rigging is in excellent condition, having been updated only a few years ago. ENGINE: The Perkins 6-354 Diesel engine offers 120 HP with approximately 8,500 hours of operation. Originally rated for 90 HP, it was upgraded for enhanced thrust and control. The engine underwent a major top-end rebuild with all key external components replaced between 2011-2017, and all hoses (fuel, water, exhaust) were changed from 2010-2014. It runs strong, achieving a cruising speed of over 7 knots at 1600 RPM, and is well-balanced with the engine centered in the vessel. This low-RPM diesel design is expected to have a lifespan of 15,000 hours with proper maintenance.
