Boat Description

The Hawaiian Chieftain is fully prepared for charters, tours, events, educational programs, and sail-training opportunities, accommodating up to 42 passengers as per her current Certificate of Inspection (COI). A 2024 marine survey and COI documents are available for review upon request. Recently restored in Port Townsend, Washington, the vessel underwent a comprehensive overhaul by the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op, Force 10 Rigging & Sailmaking, and other professionals, totaling over 20,000 hours of expert craftsmanship. Restoration highlights include: - Extensive hull, deck, and superstructure upgrades, including a 40% replacement of below-waterline areas and 20% above-waterline work. - A new hydraulic steering system and autopilot. - Updated shaft work, including new shafts and bearings. - A rebuilt anchor winch and new chain. - Installation of new Cummins engines and accessories, enhancing her cruising speed to 13 knots. - Enhanced fire suppression systems. - Newly constructed fuel tanks and grey water tank. - New main mast and fully refurbished spars, all treated with 20 coats of Ameron paint. - State-of-the-art electrical systems with new batteries and navigation equipment. - A completely renovated galley with new appliances. Built in 1988 in Lahaina, Maui, the Hawaiian Chieftain features a modern triple keel with the rig of a 19th-century trading vessel, allowing for excellent maneuverability in shallow waters. She was commissioned by Laurence Dorcy Jr., designed by Ray Richards, and constructed by Lahaina Welding Co Ltd, with her first voyage to French Polynesia in 1990. After years of sailing along the West Coast and offering educational programs on maritime history, she was briefly renamed and inactive before being acquired by the Gray's Harbor Historical Seaport Authority in 2005. Returning to her original name, she provided joint educational and training experiences alongside the Lady Washington until her retirement announcement in 2020. Purchased by her current owners in July 2021, she has been meticulously restored to 100% operational capacity, ready for new adventures. Now located at Port Townsend Boat Haven, she is available for viewing by appointment. The Hawaiian Chieftain is set to embark on her next journey with nearly all new systems, rigging, and equipment, attracting attention wherever she sails!
