Boat Description

The Ericson 34 is designed for both performance and cruising comfort, featuring a well-balanced sail-area displacement and ballast ratios. Its moderate fin keel and semi-balanced shallow spade rudder make it an impressive performer in PHRF races. Built to endure the rigors of cruising, it boasts a fiberglass hull-to-deck joint, a keel-stepped mast, and a lead ballast keel. The cockpit and deck layout exemplify the ideal features of a late 80s crossover racer-cruiser. The T-shaped cockpit is spacious enough for the helmsman to navigate around the standard 36-inch wheel while moving forward. The raised, cambered seat with gull-wing hatches provides an excellent forward view and additional vertical space in the lazarette. While the cabin-top mounted traveler can be challenging for single-handed sailors due to its distance from the mainsheet, minor modifications can enhance accessibility. A mid-boom sheeting setup may expose the boom-end to rolling in choppy waters, but its height above the deck helps maintain safety during conservative sailing in a beam sea. The double-spreader rig and high-aspect sail plan, along with inboard shrouds and genoa tracks, allow for tight sheeting angles, enabling the boat to easily tack through 90 degrees in moderate breezes. Outboard tracks on the toe rail facilitate open sheeting for downwind sailing. The wide side decks provide excellent passage fore and aft, making it one of the best designs for a monohull of this size. The hardware exceeds the standard equipment typically found in Ericson brochures, featuring a pair of self-tailing Lewman 30s on the starboard side for halyards, reefing lines, travelers, and mainsheets. An additional ST30 and a standard Lenmar 24 on the opposite side manage the vang, reefing tack line, and jib halyard. A rigid boom vang effectively controls mainsail leech twist and supports the boom when the topping lift is slack. Jib furling lines and genoa sheets are conveniently within reach of the helm, and a simple lazy-jack system makes setting and dousing the mainsail effortless.
