Boat Description

FOR SALE: Columbia 50, Yellowbird (Hull #32) - Hailing Port: Marina del Rey, CA 90292. This motivated seller presents an exceptional opportunity for a "LIVEABOARD" setup, ensuring superior comfort throughout the vessel's restoration. The spacious main cabin measures 11 ft. wide and 17 ft. long, offering a panoramic view of the Marina del Rey Main Channel from the open rear cockpit. Enjoy high-security gated permit parking in an ultra-private setting, complete with an extra-wide 60 ft. berth for your auxiliary vessel. Yellowbird has a storied history, having raced in San Francisco Bay and graced the cover of original Columbia 50 factory brochures (Sail#8532). Originally commissioned in 1967 for aerospace pioneer Frank Druding, she was designed by naval architect Bill Tripp, Jr. for heavy-weather racing, featuring an extra ton of ballast and a shorter mast, making her unique among Columbia 50s. The second owner, Scott Foster, and his family voyaged to key South Pacific ports. Current owner, architect Gary Neville, acquired Yellowbird in 1978 and has made significant upgrades, including a redesigned teak cabin interior and custom stainless steel modifications. In 2013, the hull was painted all-white with a red boot stripe, enhancing her aesthetic. Noteworthy features include a custom stainless steel bow roller assembly and a dual bilge pump system designed for enhanced safety. Despite unforeseen circumstances halting full redesign work, Yellowbird remains a robust vessel with no known structural issues. An engine rebuild or replacement is necessary due to submersion damage from a broken fitting. However, the vessel's strong foundation and light use over the years ensure a promising future for the new owner. Additional recent upgrades include a custom solid-stock teak cabin interior, a split-level main cabin with a single forward stateroom layout, and various high-quality fixtures throughout. Yellowbird offers an excellent balance of luxury and performance, making her a showstopper at yacht clubs and a capable passage-maker in heavy weather. Once restored, she promises safe and smooth sailing, thriving in 20-25 knots of wind. Happy sailing!
