ZIG ZIG is an exceptional example of the Able 44 'Wolf' class of Downeast express cruisers, designed by Chuck Paine and crafted by Able Marine in Northeast Harbor, Maine. This vessel is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful boats of its kind on the water today. With breathtaking lines and impeccable craftsmanship, ZIG ZIG offers an incredible ride, effortlessly planing at 16 knots and cruising swiftly at 24 knots. The exterior showcases rich varnished mahogany and teak, including toe rails, eyebrows, handrails, and seats, coupled with a striking Flag Blue hull, enhancing her unique aesthetic.
Over the years, ZIG ZIG has undergone continuous upgrades, including a complete repowering with larger engines for enhanced speed, a transformation of the original Herreshoff-style interior to a stunning cherry raised-panel finish, and custom features like a mahogany helm and tailored pedestal seating. The pilothouse is fitted with low E-tinted glass windows, custom accent carpeting, and bespoke interior linens, along with a suite of modern electronics.
The current owner has further enhanced ZIG ZIG with variable-speed bow and stern thrusters that include a 'side-hold' feature, and a comprehensive Garmin electronics package, complete with GPS plotting, radar, VHF radio, autopilot, and AIS. After a summer of cruising the South Coast from Padanaram on Buzzards Bay, he ventured south to the Florida panhandle for winter exploration, before making a swift return up the coast with engines performing flawlessly.
In the winter of 2022, ZIG ZIG underwent an extensive refit in Bristol, RI, where the deck house, foredeck, and cockpit areas were refurbished with new gelcoat, and the bottom was stripped and barrier coated. All bronze opening ports were re-chromed, and a tall sailboat mast that disrupted the bridge deck flow was removed, along with the installation of a new bimini top and custom curtains. The interior received new custom carpets, matching the distinctive existing ones, and the custom Dyer sailing dinghy was restored and repaired. Additional updates in 2022 included a new holding tank system, a water heater, and Lumishore underwater lights.
In winter 2024, major preventative maintenance was performed on the Volvo engines, ensuring a flawless trip back to the South Coast from Norfolk, VA. With her stunning appearance, excellent handling, and spacious layout, ZIG ZIG stands out as an ideal dayboat, offering ample seating in a large cockpit and a protected bridge deck, perfect for entertaining family and friends. Simultaneously, her cruising interior accommodates couples or families of six comfortably, featuring a spacious stall shower, a fantastic galley, and a salon with a large convertible table. Bravo!
